Modern History

My main research interests lie broadly in the field of late 19th and 20th-century history of Central Europe and its southern transitional areas. In particular, I focus on the (formerly) Habsburg borderland regions in the Alps and on the Upper Adriatic Sea. The past of this unique European crossroad of cultures and languages is embedded in the history of larger spaces. Therefore my area of interest comprises Italy, the German-speaking countries, and Southeast Europe. Additionally, my research interests include social and rural history, historical demography, and the history of tourism and mountaineering. Find a list of my research and publication metadata here.

Paper: »Seizing the Past – Shaping the Future: Slovene Cultural Heritage under Nazi Occupation«

Seizure and transfer of cultural heritage across German occupied Europe were part of the Nazi strategy for reorganizing the continent’s space and population. The appropriation of artifacts is closely linked to the appropriation of the past and its reinterpretation; it is aimed at claiming, securing and representing power as well as at the denationalisation of people and the ‘ethnic purification’ of cultural landscapes. As was the case of Slovenia, cultural heritage is generally loaded with complex symbolic emotional, historical and ideological charges. While it is therefore hardly surprising that the confiscation of cultural assets played a major role in Nazi occupation policy, marked by intense efforts to eradicate Slovene identity and culture, it does come as a surprise, however, that this subject remained largely unaddressed by historians and art historians until only a few years ago. The paper traces the numerous German authorities involved in the relocation of cultural assets; it analyses their specific intentions as well as their ways of thinking and acting. It deals with the differences compared to other Nazi occupied territories, and traces the whereabouts of works of art and their political use and musealisation. The paper also sheds light on those collaborating circles of Slovene society (not only of ‘volksdeutsch’ origin) that occasionally were key figures in seizing artifacts. Finally, it touches upon the lengthy post-war restitution processes, which for a long time were overshadowed by the Cold War, by persisting ethnical conflicts, excessive Yugoslavian claims and Austrian obstructionism.

Odvzem in transfer kulturne dediščine po nemško okupirani Evropi sta bila del nacistične strategije za reorganizacijo prostora in prebivalstva celine. Prisvojitev artefaktov je tesno povezana s prisvojitvijo preteklosti in njeno reinterpretacijo; njen cilj je uveljavljanje, zavarovanje in predstavljanje moči ter denacionalizacija ljudi in »etnično čiščenje« kulturnih krajin. Kot v primeru Slovenije je kulturna dediščina na splošno obremenjena s kompleksnimi simbolnimi čustvenimi, zgodovinskimi in ideološkimi pomeni, zato je razumljivo, da je zaplemba kulturnih dobrin igrala pomembno vlogo v nacistični okupacijski politiki, zaznamovani z intenzivnimi prizadevanji za izkoreninjenje slovenske identitete in kulture. Vendarle pa je presenetljivo, da so zgodovinarji in umetnostni zgodovinarji to temo do pred nekaj leti v glavnem prezrli. Avtor v predavanju sledi številnim nemškim organom, vpletenim v transfer kulturnih dobrin; analizira njihove specifične namere ter načine razmišljanja in delovanja. Obravnava razlike v primerjavi z drugimi nacistično okupiranimi ozemlji in sledi lokacijam umetniških del ter njihovi politični uporabi in muzealizaciji. Avtor osvetljuje tudi tiste kolaborativne kroge slovenske družbe (ne le »volksdeutsch« porekla), ki so bili včasih ključne figure pri zaplembi artefaktov. Nazadnje se dotakne dolgotrajnih povojnih procesov restitucije, ki so bili dolgo časa v senci hladne vojne, vztrajnih etničnih konfliktov, pretiranih jugoslovanskih zahtev in avstrijskega obstrukcionizma.

Auf der UNESCO-Liste der Weltkulturerbestätten rangiert Italien an erster Stelle. Welche Schäden und Verluste erlitt das reiche kulturelle Erbe des Landes im Zuge der beiden großen militärischen Konflikte des 20. Jahrhunderts? Welche Maßnahmen wurden zum Schutz der Kulturgüter ergriffen – von den italienischen Behörden einerseits und den deutschen ›Kunstschutz‹-Abteilungen in den Besatzungsgebieten andererseits? Wie verlief hier die Debatte um die Kriegszerstörung von Kunstwerken, seitdem mit dem Brand der Kathedrale von Reims 1914 international der Vorwurf deutscher Kulturbarbarei im Raume stand? Welche Rolle spielten legale Ankäufe auf dem italienischen Kunstmarkt sowie Zwangsverkäufe, ›Beschaffungen‹, Beschlagnahmungen und Kunstraub durch das ›Dritte Reich‹? Wie vollzog sich die Ausplünderung der italienischen Juden durch deutsche Dienststellen, und welches waren die Wege von Aneignung und ›Verwertung‹ von Kunstwerken aus jüdischem Besitz? Wer war in diese Vorgänge verwickelt? Welche Funktion hatten die beratenden Kunsthistoriker? Und wie intervenierten die alliierten monuments men? Der Vortrag stellt grundsätzliche Unterschiede zwischen dem Kunstschutzverständnis der beiden Weltkriege heraus. Er fragt danach, inwieweit sich die Aneignung von Kunst als symbolisches Kapital mit Fragen der Herrschaftssicherung verband und wie die späteren Rückstellungen von Kulturgut nach Italien verliefen.

Mansion Ruda near Sevnica/Štajerska, owned by Bohemia-born art collector and fine art publisher Hugo Uhlíř (1881-1965; see Slovenska biografija), was confiscated by the Reich Commissioner for Strengthening Germandom (Reichskommissar für die Festigung deutschen Volkstums) in mid-1941.
