Modern History

My main research interests lie broadly in the field of late 19th and 20th-century history of Central Europe and its southern transitional areas. In particular, I focus on the (formerly) Habsburg borderland regions in the Alps and on the Upper Adriatic Sea. The past of this unique European crossroad of cultures and languages is embedded in the history of larger spaces. Therefore my area of interest comprises Italy, the German-speaking countries, and Southeast Europe. Additionally, my research interests include social and rural history, historical demography, and the history of tourism and mountaineering. Find a list of my research and publication metadata here.

Die Alpen – ein Sehnsuchtsort: 2019 zählten die Alpenländer 226 Millionen Übernachtungsgäste; Südtirol hat 2023 eine Touristen-Obergrenze eingeführt. Doch Tourismus-Schelte und Klagen über die Ökonomisierung von Natur und Landschaft sind nicht neu. Was macht die Faszination der Alpen aus? Was gilt als landschaftlich ästhetisch? Wie blicken wir auf die Alpenbewohner? Und wie haben sich die Kriterien dieser Anschauungen im Laufe der Zeit gewandelt? Ein Blick zurück auf 500 Jahre Alpenwahrnehmung.
